Effective DJ Marketing

Are you a....
  [ ] Club DJ
  [ ] Mobile DJ
  [ ] Radio DJ

If so, then you have got to read these Five (5) Questions and Answers !!!
You've come to the right place to learn more about how Audio Grafics can help make your performance unforgettable through personalized disc jockey bumpers.

Q1: What are bumpers?
A1: Bumpers are short "spots" played between songs.  Sometimes they are known as "liners", "sweepers" or "IDs".   They serve a number of purposes:

1. They identify (ID) the Disc Jockey, Radio Station, DJ Company, etc.

2. They serve as segues from one song to the next, especially when a sharp change in "BPMs" will take place.

3. Each time they are played, they market the performer and performance so that all people listening will have an auditory reminder of who is providing the music.

Q2: Will bumpers really help me market myself as a DJ?
A2: If they weren't so effective, radio stations wouldn't use them.  Try a little experiment:   Turn on your radio and scan stations for a few minutes paying close attention to what you hear between songs.  Without a doubt, you'll hear bumpers!  Chances are, some will be so familar to you that you'll immediately recognize the radio station.   Believe me, that radio station wants you to recognize them.  That's precisely why they spend lots of time, resources and money carefully "imaging" their station with these bumpers.  It works for them and it can work for you. (By the way, Radio DJs find our personalized bumpers invaluable for their on-air shows as well as their demo tapes !!!)

Q3: If I use bumpers, won't it cause my performance to sound more like a radio station and less like the performer and entertainer that I am?
A3: NO !!! Absolutely NOT !!! Properly utilizing bumpers into your mix will actually add to your professional image and lend you greater credibility.  While it is possible that bumpers can be overused during a performance, most professional caliber Club and Mobile DJs have pretty good instincts and intuition about when to end a song early, when talk over a song, or how and when to interact with the audience.  These professionals will easily be able to incorporate the appropriate use of personalized bumpers into their mix as well, creating an atmosphere of professionalism while identifying and marketing their entertainment product.

Q4: Isn't it expensive to have promotional bumpers personally produced for me or my DJ company?
A4: Not if you let Audio Grafics produce them for you.  Best of all, the money you spend on these "tools of the trade" are investments because they have the potential to reap you great rewards.  Each time you use a bumper, it's as if you are running a mini-commercial for yourself and/or your company.  Remember, the best "target market audience" for a DJ is the audience that is currently at the event hearing the performance.  Every single person there is a potential future client.  Bumpers help you make certain these potential clients know who you are and will remember you in the future.  (By the way, Radio Disc Jockeys find our personalized bumpers to be an affordable way of keeping their show fresh !!!)

Q5: Can't I make my own?
A5: Sure you can, but you'll have at least two things working against you if you attempt such a task.

First of all, your voice should not be the voice that introduces, identifies or promotes you.  This is a basic rule of thumb in entertainment.  In fact, turn on the radio and listen for bumpers between songs.  Chances are, even the lowliest of stations will have a "Station Voice" that is not a station personality.

Secondly, figure out what you typically make for one hour of work as a DJ.  Chances are, the amount of time you would have to put into producing a truly professional bumper would make a serious dent in your payroll if you had to pay yourself your hourly rate.  And that's just labor--it doesn't include the costs of digital production equipment, the appropriate sound effects and background sounds or the other resources that you would require to produce a product that doesn't sound "homemade".  A poorly made, unprofessionally produced, homemade sounding bumper has the potential to destroy your professional image and reputation.
